Skopje is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans, with a history spanning over 2,000 years.
Originally known as Scupi, it was a Roman settlement and an important trade center. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city came under the Byzantine Empire and later became part of the medieval Serbian Empire under Stefan Dušan.
In 1392, Skopje was conquered by the Ottomans, who ruled for over 500 years and left a strong cultural mark, including landmarks like the Old Bazaar.
In the 20th century, the city became part of Yugoslavia. A devastating event, the 1963 Skopje earthquake, destroyed much of the city, leading to a major international rebuilding effort.
Today, Skopje is the capital of North Macedonia, known for its mix of historical heritage and modern architecture.
