Berlin is glowing — and not just with city lights, but with stories, colors, and imagination.

The Berlin Festival of Lights officially kicked off last week, and once again, the German capital has transformed its most iconic buildings into a canvas of breathtaking projections and luminous art. The event is free and from October 8th to 15th (19:00 - 23:00 Berlin time), the city becomes a living light gallery, drawing visitors from across the globe.

The theme for the 2025 Berlin Festival of Lights is "Let's shine together," focusing on unity, community, and connection. The event aims to bring people together through art and light installations, creating shared experiences that foster unity and understanding.

What not to miss:

Brandenburg Gate – Always a showstopper, and this year’s installation is interactive

Last Thursday evening, crowds gathered at Pariser Platz as the Gate lit up in a spectacular display of animation and projection art. Each beam of light told a story — of Berlin’s resilience, creativity, and diversity. The show pulsed with rhythm and symbolism, reflecting this year’s theme, “Let’s Shine Together.”

Museum Island — Where Classical Facades Meet Digital Storytelling

A short walk away, Museum Island offers a different kind of magic. Against the backdrop of Berlin’s most treasured cultural landmarks — the Pergamon Museum, and the Altes Museum, Intricate projections bring sculptures and frescoes to life, merging centuries of history with cutting-edge technology. Columns glow with patterns that shift like brushstrokes; ancient gods and mythic scenes seem to move across the stone as if

awakened from their slumber.

Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) – Stunning 3D projections that change nightly

Rising majestically beside the Spree River, the Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) is a vision of divine artistry at the festival. Its grand dome and ornate façade become the centerpiece of a radiant performance that combines music, light, and storytelling.

Vivid projections wrap the Cathedral in shifting hues of gold, blue, and violet — transforming its sacred architecture into a luminous symbol of faith and harmony. The reflections dance on the river’s surface, creating a mirror of color that seem to double the beauty of the moment.

Potsdamer Platz – A modern hub with futuristic light sculptures

In contrast to the city’s historic landmarks, Potsdamer Platz bring an electrifying burst of modern energy to the Festival of Lights. Surrounded by glass towers, cinemas, and bustling cafés, the square becomes a futuristic playground of color and motion.

Here, digital projections leap across skyscrapers, light installations pulsed with music, and interactive displays invite visitors to become part of the art. The atmosphere is lively and urban — a reminder that Berlin isn’t just a city of history, but also a hub of innovation and creativity.

Oberbaum Bridge — A Bridge Between Light and History

To the east, the Oberbaum Bridge (Oberbaumbrücke) provides one of the festival’s most breathtaking views. Stretching gracefully across the River Spree, the bridge glows in warm amber and crimson hues, symbolizing the unity of Berlin’s once-divided halves — Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.

Light projections dance across its Gothic arches, while the U-Bahn rumble overhead, adding a rhythm of motion and life. Reflections ripple beneath the bridge, creating a mirror of light that captures the essence of the festival: connection, creativity, and shared joy. Standing there, watching the lights shimmer over the water, you could feel the city’s heart — open, vibrant, and alive.
